Alicante Carnaval Taking Place This Weekend!
The pagan festival is getting ready to take over the streets of the city, flooding it with music, dancing, and fantastic costumes to celebrate the end of winter. The city of Alicante is known internationally for the Hogueras fiestas, but Carnival is also celebrated as one of the most popular and important days of the year.
The Carnaval is characterized by being open and inclusive of all sexualities, religions and people, everyone is welcome. without enclosures or restricted areas, all people can actively participate in the events so why not dress up and let your hair down?
What day does it start?
This year Alicante's Carnival 2019 starts on Thursday 28 February. One day later the official proclamation will take place and Saturday the 2nd of March will be the big day of the festivities with the 'Sábado Ramblero'.
At lunchtime, the city centre begins to take on colour. People come to eat tapas and have drinks in the area to start the festivities early. Once night falls, the Rambla takes centre stage. Thousands of people come to the main avenue and flood it dancing to music dressed in a multitude of flamboyant costumes. Here you can find all kinds of characters, from the classic costumes (Indians and cowboys, superheroes, nuns, Vikings, etc..) to quirky, topical costumes. So get ready to put on your dancing shoes and clear your diary as the festivities last well into Sunday morning!
